Periodontitis is caused by pathogenic micro-organisms in the mouth that accumulate in plaque and cause gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. If the plaque build-up is not removed, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, resulting in the loss of periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone.

Traditionally, periodontitis is treated by mechanical removal of plaque (supragingival and subgingival) and oral hygiene training. This reduces the bacterial load in the mouth only temporarily, as pathogenic bacteria quickly recolonise the oral cavity.
