What is xylitol? Xylitol is a natural substance extracted from plants. It is antibacterial, protects the teeth, stimulates saliva production and helps restore the oral microflora. It breaks down bacterial colonies on the surface of the teeth to reduce plaque build-up and promote remineralisation.

Xylitol is not digested by Streptcoccus mutans bacteria, which is one of the main causes of tooth decay. S.mutans can neither digest nor eliminate xylitol and therefore cannot release acidic metabolic products into the mouth, which cause a decrease in the pH of the mouth, which is the cause of caries. Studies show that xylitol reduces the amount of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) bacteria and the lactic acid they produce. This acid erodes tooth enamel and prevents remineralisation.

Xylitol can help prevent ear infections in children: the bacteria that attack children's teeth are very similar to those that cause ear infections. So here, xylitol can actually help and protect.
