100% xylitol sweetened chewing gum has been shown to reduce plaque. Plaque build-up is a risk factor for the development of dental caries in children. A positive effect is achieved if 2 to 3 g of 100% xylitol-sweetened chewing gum is consumed at least 3 times a day after meals.

The beneficial effects are seen by chewing xylitol chewing gum for at least 20 minutes after eating or drinking. (Consuming food containing xylitol rather than sugar supports tooth mineralisation.)
